Why You Should Wear a Motorcycle Helmet
June 20, 2017
We know that one of the most appealing aspects of riding a motorcycle is the freedom and feeling the wind on your face. However, even if the law says you don’t need to wear a helmet, it’s generally a good idea to do so. Helmets can help protect you from severe brain injury in the event of an accident, and may even save your life.
Motorcycle Helmet Laws in Kentucky and Indiana
Each state has its own motorcycle helmet laws, so it’s important to be aware of both your local laws and the laws of any state you plan to travel to. Here in Kentucky, the law states that anyone under 21 must wear a helmet. You must also wear a helmet if you’ve had your license for less than a year, or if you only have a learner’s permit.
In Indiana, you only need to wear a helmet if you are 17 years old or younger. Despite this, it is a good idea to wear a helmet at any age. Even the most experienced rider may get into a motorcycle accident through no fault of their own, and in that case a helmet may potentially be the difference between life or death.
Types of Motorcycle Accidents
There are many different ways a motorcyclist may get into an accident, no matter how cautious or experienced a driver they are. Many motorcycle collisions occur when drivers of cars are not paying enough attention and hit a motorcyclist. Road hazards such as potholes or uneven lanes are another common cause of crashes. Resulting injuries can include:
- Upper body injuries (head, neck, and shoulder)
- Brain or spinal cord injury
- Burns
- Loss of limb
- Severe scarring
While a helmet cannot protect your whole body, it does help to protect one of the body’s most vital organs: the brain.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident
If you are in a motorcycle crash or collision, you may be entitled to damages including cost of medical treatment and rehabilitation, potential lost wages, and pain and suffering. Contact an experienced attorney as soon as you are able, so that you can obtain the maximum compensation owed to you. Insurance companies do not have your best interests at heart, and will try to shortchange you wherever they can. An attorney will help fight for your rights.
