Tips to Avoid Auto or Motorcycle Accidents

July 25, 2017

Automotive accidents are a leading cause of death and serious injury in America. There are many reasons a person may get into an accident involving a car or motorcycle, including:

  • Distracted driving
  • Drowsy driving
  • Speeding
  • Driving under the influence
  • Not obeying traffic laws

While you can’t prevent someone else from driving dangerously, there are steps you can take to be a safe driver and help avoid accidents.

Avoiding Car Crashes

The best way to help prevent car accidents on the road is to pay attention to your surroundings and other drivers at all times and obey all traffic laws. Texting, talking on the phone, changing your music, running red lights or stop signs, and speeding can all contribute to getting into an accident.

If you have been drinking, make sure you do not drive. Driving under the influence is not only illegal, but extremely dangerous. Many traffic fatalities could have been avoided if the driver had simply taken an Uber or a cab back home.

Avoiding Motorcycle Crashes

Motorcycles are much more vulnerable than passenger vehicles, due to their highly exposed nature. A motorcycle accident is much more likely to result in a fatality as well. As motorcyclists are most at risk on the roads, being extra vigilant and cautious is absolutely necessary to stay safe.

Some tips for motorcyclists include:

  • Pay attention to what cars are doing. Many motorcycle accidents occur when the driver of a car does not see the motorcyclist during a left turn or a merge.
  • Keep an eye out for road hazards. Something that is a minor inconvenience for a car, such as a pothole or loose gravel, can be deadly for someone on a motorcycle.
  • Obey the law. Kentucky does not allow lane splitting, and even in states that do allow it, it pays to be cautious. Never lane split next to parked cars, as a suddenly opened door could spell disaster.
