Texting May Have Caused Accident That Killed a Driving Instructor

Earlier this month, a 69-year-old driving instructor died as a result of injuries he suffered in an auto accident in Indiana.* A 16-year-old driving student was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. Although WHAS11 reports that the investigation is ongoing, they also say that a police report points to texting as the cause of the accident.

WHAS11 says the collision occurred as the 16-year-old student driver stopped to make a left turn off of US 52. A pickup truck crashed into the back of the vehicle, catastrophically injuring the driving instructor. Tragically, he died of his injuries in the hospital the next day. WHAS11 says the student driver was treated at the hospital and released. As of right now, no charges have been filed against the driver of the pickup truck.

It has in no way been proven that the pickup driver caused the accident nor that he caused it because he was texting. But WHAS11 says it was suggested in the police report.

In general – not necessarily related to the Indiana accident discussed above – texting while you are driving is a very dangerous driving behavior. It takes your eyes, hands and mind off the task of driving.
