Check Your VIN for Takata Airbag Recall on Safercar.gov
May 20, 2015
34 million Takata airbags have been recalled due to defective inflators, resulting in the biggest automotive recall in U.S. history.
The faulty airbag inflators suffer from weak propellants that deteriorate over time, and cause violent, shrapnel-launching ruptures when deployed in even minor auto accidents. In some instances, victims were so badly injured that police believed knives or guns were involved, due to the extreme nature of the resulting damage. So far, these lethal explosions have been associated with six fatalities and more than 100 injuries.
Auto Manufacturers involved with the recall include:
- BMW
- Chrysler
- Daimler Trucks
- Ford
- General Motors
- Honda
- Mazda
- Mitsubishi
- Nissan
- Subaru
- Toyota
What You Can Do
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has established a website which helps determine whether your vehicle is among those involved in the recall. The site includes links to a VIN search tool and a manufacturer’s recall search page to direct you to specific carmakers’ product recall web pages.
The list of car models employing the defective airbags is still progressing, so it’s critical to continue checking these VIN search pages in the coming weeks to accurately determine your vehicle’s airbag safety. NBC Nightly News reports that it could take years before there are enough replacement parts available to fix every affected vehicle.
At the moment, one in every four vehicles is impacted by the recall, and continues to operate in what lawmakers refer to as a “public safety threat”.
