Kentucky Motorcycle Laws

May 10, 2017

Kentucky is a great place to ride a motorcycle. The lakes, rivers and grasslands are just some of the sights you’ll enjoy. Motorcycles are a prized form of getting around the city as well. Whatever your preferred style of motorcycle riding, it’s important to follow the rules of the road to reduce the risk of getting in a serious accident:

  • If you are over the age of 21 and have held a motorcycle license for at least one year, then you are not required to wear a helmet.
  • If you are under the age of 21, and/or have held your license for less than a year, then you are required by law to wear a helmet.
  • The operator of the motorcycle must have a valid motor vehicle operator license. This license must have the required endorsement to operate a motorcycle.
  • The motorcycle operator must wear approved eye protection.
  • The motorcycle must be equipped with a rearview mirror.
  • You may not have passengers if you are operating a motorcycle with an instruction permit.

The laws above are specific to motorcycles. It is important to note that the same laws applying to other motor vehicles apply to motorcycles, such as speed limits and drunk driving laws.

Motorcycle accidents easily lead to catastrophic physical injury, including fatal injuries. Laws in place are designed to keep you and others on the road safe by reducing the likelihood of an accident.
