Driving Tips for Teen Driver Safety Week

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recognizes this week – October 16 to 22 – as National Teen Driver Safety Week. Motor vehicle deaths continue to rise this year, according to the NHTSA. Sometimes, the victims of these tragedies are teenagers:

• Accidents in motor vehicles are the leading cause of death for 15-19 year-olds in America
• About 123,000 teens were injured in auto accidents in 2014
• In 2014, 2,679 teen drivers were involved in fatal motor vehicle accidents

As the parents of teenagers, we can help prevent traffic accidents by helping our teens to be better drivers. The NHTSA is asking parents to teach their teens the “5 to Drive” rules:

• Always wear a seat belt
• No alcohol and driving
• No distracted driving
• No speeding
• No extra passengers

About 94 percent of all motor vehicle accidents are a result of human error, including cell phone use and other things that are completely preventable. Although adults and teens alike are vulnerable to human error, teens are less experienced drivers. As a result, they can benefit from experienced guidance from parents and other adult drivers.
