April is Alcohol Awareness Month

April 11, 2017

Founded and sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), Alcohol Awareness Month was established to help educate the public about alcohol use, alcoholism and recovery. Unfortunately, alcohol use is one of the leading causes of fatal motorcycle accidents.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 28 percent of fatally injured motorcycle drivers in 2015 had a blood alcohol concentration at or above 0.08 percent. In single-vehicle crashes, this was even higher at 42 percent.

But what, exactly, can you do promote motorcycle safety on the roads?

With the spring and summer weather quickly approaching, more and more motorcyclists will hit the road. It’s important to take the proper steps to help reduce alcohol use while behind the handle bars, including:

  • Assign a designated driver
  • Never drink and drive
  • If you notice someone else on their bike who was drinking, arrange a ride home
  • Use ride-sharing services
  • Offer non-alcoholic beverages
  • Educate other drivers on the importance of driving sober

However, despite taking all of the proper precautions and steps, accidents still can and do happen. If you or a loved one was injured or even killed in a motorcycle accident due to someone else’s negligence, it’s important to know that you have rights and that an experienced motorcycle accident attorney may be able to help. That’s where the litigation team at Karl Truman Law Office comes into play.
